Why October Is the Best Time to Schedule Your Routine Dental Appointment
October 11, 2026 9:00 amThe cleaning you meant to book over the summer can still be on the list when October arrives. Now there are school events, work deadlines, and holiday travel starting to fill the calendar. Reviewing year-end dental benefits this month gives you time to arrange the visit and any follow-up before December gets crowded.
At Lake Five Dentistry in Colgate, Wisconsin, we can help you work out what insurance may pay and schedule the care you need this fall. Dr. Kierstin Lorenz checks your teeth and gums, and our team goes over the estimated insurance contribution and your share. We accept both in-network and out-of-network plans, with costs based on the policy you have.
Check Your Benefit-Year Dates
Many dental plans renew benefits on January 1, but some use a different date. Before you plan around December 31, we can check when your benefit year ends. If your plan renews later, you may have more time to use the remaining benefits than the calendar suggests.
An annual maximum is the most your insurer will pay toward covered care during your benefit year. With many plans, unused benefits expire when that year ends. Some allow a portion to carry over, so we can check whether your policy has that option and what you need to do to qualify.
If your job or policy has changed, bring the new insurance information when you schedule. Even with the same insurer’s name on the card, the network, limits, or benefit-year dates may have changed. We use the current details to estimate your visit rather than last year’s coverage.
What Insurance Pays for Cleanings and Exams
Exams, cleanings, and X-rays often receive preventive benefits, but their coverage and frequency vary. A plan may use a set number of visits per year or require a particular interval between them. We can check those limits before you assume another cleaning is covered this fall.
Some plans pay for preventive visits without taking that amount from the annual maximum. Others count those payments toward it, so the same balance can mean something different under another policy. If you’ve used your maximum on other treatment, we can still check whether a cleaning or exam has separate coverage.
If you’ve had periodontitis, your next appointment may be periodontal maintenance rather than a routine cleaning. For active gum disease, we may recommend scaling and root planing to clean farther along the roots. We explain why your gums need that care and check how your plan covers the service being recommended.
Checking Your Remaining Benefits
The balance in your insurer’s portal may still include money that a recent claim will use. Check for appointments marked pending or processing when you look at what remains. Once the insurer pays those claims, the amount available for your next treatment may be lower.
A visit to another dental practice can use the same annual maximum. For example, a specialist’s claim may still be processing when you check the balance online. Include that visit so we can account for the payment the insurer may make before your next appointment with us.
If the portal shows $500 remaining, that doesn’t automatically mean $500 will come off your next bill. Your deductible, the covered percentage, and service limits still apply. We can work those details into the estimate so you can see the insurer’s expected contribution and what you would pay.
An October Exam Leaves Time for Follow-Up
At the routine visit, Dr. Lorenz can check the teeth, gums, bite, and existing restorations. When needed, X-rays help us see decay between teeth or changes beneath the surface. A tooth can need a repair before it starts interrupting meals.
If a tooth needs a filling or crown, we explain how soon to repair it and which appointments come next. You may need time for a temporary tooth, laboratory work, or another visit to complete treatment. An October exam leaves more room for those steps before travel and holidays tighten your schedule.
For treatment with several stages, we also check which service date the insurer uses. A crown started in December and completed in January may fall into a different benefit year than you expect. We can request a pre-treatment estimate when needed, although the final payment can change if coverage ends or other claims use up benefits before that treatment.
When to Schedule Recommended Treatment
If a tooth is infected, cracked, or losing structure to decay, we explain how soon it needs care. Waiting for January may give the problem time to worsen, even if benefits will renew then. We explain how long the tooth can safely wait, then work insurance timing into that schedule.
If some of the work can safely wait, we can discuss completing it in stages across benefit years. We estimate each stage and explain any temporary care needed between visits. If your policy is changing in January, the next year’s costs need to be checked against that new coverage.
If an area only needs monitoring or preventive care, that remains the recommendation even when you have benefits left. For treatment we do recommend, we can show you the problem and explain the options. That way, you can plan the appointment with both the dental findings and estimated cost in front of you.
Paying for Care Beyond Insurance
If you don’t have dental insurance, we also offer an in-house membership plan. You can choose from adult, child, and periodontal options, with included preventive visits and discounts on other care. We go over the fee and what you would pay for the appointments your teeth and gums need.
If insurance covers only part of the bill, we can go over payment options, including Cherry financing. Financing spreads costs into payments and has its own terms, so review the repayment details alongside your treatment estimate. We can explain which payment methods our office accepts before treatment begins.
If you’re expecting new insurance in January, bring whatever information you have about it. The new plan may pay different percentages or cover visits at different intervals. We can check those details before you rely on the same cost for next year’s treatment.
